Inoculation Proclamation

Pet inoculation provides increased immunity to disease, and has made some diseases rare and others like rabies, almost nonexistent in our community.  Vaccines help keep pets healthy and your family safe from cross species (Zoonotic) diseases.  Unfortunately, there is a small potential for negative side effects.  At Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital and Northstar Animal Care, we design a vaccination protocol that best fits your pet.  From non-adjuvanted and needless cat vaccines to help reduce the chance of cancerous tumors, to extended vaccine recommendations for adult pets, we aim to provide innovative inoculation.

Reactions most often occur within the first 72 hours.  Vaccine reactions have been reported at 0.48% in cats and 0.38% in dogs.  It is normal for your pet to experience mild discomfort upon injection, followed by irritation, pain, or swelling at the injection site.  Most pets are often quiet or sleepy for the remainder of the day as well.  Severe reactions can result in fever, multiple episodes of vomiting/diarrhea, facial swelling or difficulty breathing.  Without treatment, these reactions could result in tragedy.  If your pet experiences any of these symptoms, offer them 1 mg per pound of Benadryl orally and contact your veterinarian.  If your pet is struggling for air or if the antihistamine does not provide resolution quickly, a trip to the vet will be vital to stop the anaphylactic reaction.  Call Upper Arlington at 481.8014 or Northstar in Grandview at 488.4121 to schedule or discuss your pet’s vaccinations.

PS. Generally the smaller the pet, the higher the risk for a vaccine reaction.  If your pet is very small, vaccination administration may be spaced out over time.
